2012 Get Fit with UrbanKick Challenge
A healthy fitness transformation and weight loss challenge.
In the spirit of the Biggest Loser ™ and Extreme Makeover ™ Weight Loss Edition I have launched my own local search for candidates for: 2012 Get Fit with UrbanKick Challenge, a healthy fitness transformation and weight loss challenge.
So many people start off each New Year with a resolution to eat better, lose weight and get in shape, and most give up by February because they make unsustainable changes, set unrealistic goals and don’t see results. I want to show that with the right physical activity, foods, approach and attitude anyone can transform his or her body for life. To prove it, I will choose one person who can demonstrate an ongoing struggle with weight, a positive attitude and willingness for change, for six months of comprehensive fitness training with me.
Unlike the Biggest Loser ™ and Extreme Makeover ™ Weight Loss Edition, in which contestants are assigned personal trainers and undergo several hours of intense exercise every day, the 2012 Get Fit with UrbanKick Challenge, will take a different approach. I love that those shows inspire so many and show that dramatic change is possible, but they’re also largely unrealistic. People live everyday lives – they work, they go to school, they raise families and they sometimes make it to the gym. Not everyone can spend several hours of every day dedicated entirely to exercise.
I will customize the winner’s program to fit within his or her schedule. No doubt, the winner will have to make lifestyle changes and possibly move a few things around to succeed but by learning to set SMART goals (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-sensitive), they can learn to take control of their lives and reach their desired goal. With my approach the changes will be gradual, healthy, and realistic, and will include nutritional guidance and efficient workouts designed to get the most use of the winner’s time. With the right plan and support, so much is possible over the course of the program.
UrbanKick will select a winner through an online application process. The application will require a photo and answers to essay questions, along with personal interviews with the top five finalists. The goal is to unearth someone who is committed to working hard and fully accepts that change doesn’t come overnight. This is not a contest for someone seeking a shortcut and to drop a lot of weight very, very quickly. I’m not interested in working with someone whose priority is only to look good.
This is also about feeling good, improving one’s health and quality of life, and demonstrating to the winner just how strong and capable he or she really is. Witnessing transformative change in my clients is what I’m passionate about.
With the intention of giving back to the local community, the contest is limited to residents of Oakland, California. I live in Oakland, and UrbanKick is based in Oakland. This is a community that I love to live in, and I want to do my part to pay it forward and make it a healthier place. When people see one of their own make a positive change and see that it’s possible, there are ripple effects.
How to apply
The deadline for all submissions is January 27, 2012 at 11:59 p.m. PST. Top five finalists will be notified for a round of on-camera interviews one week after submissions, and a final winner will be selected one week after that. There is no cost to apply or cost to the winner of the program. I plan to take the winner through a series of assessments in the beginning, including body fat testing and a fitness assessment to determine baseline fitness. We will also document the change throughout the program with ongoing updates to our website and Facebook page including photos, videos and commentary.
